A study to identify small metabolite biomarkers of effect following exposure to single or mixtures of pesticides

This research project aimed to develop biomarkers for effects of mixtures of low level pesticide residues in food. Rats consumed residues of pesticides in food and the chemicals excreted in their urine were analysed. In conclusion, the results of this work indicated that it is possible to identify metabolomic biomarkers of effect of pesticides. However, the pesticides did not all reliably affect the concentration of one particular urinary metabolite and so it was not possible to undertake mathematical modelling of the effects of mixtures.
