The prevalence of infection was 100%, with all salmon and sea trout sampled being found to be infected with parasitic worms. The numbers of larvae found in the salmon flesh were variable but often exceeded 100, although the mean numbers per salmon detected per fishing location ranged from 17-51. While all sea trout were also infected, the numbers of worms per fish were lower. All worms were found to be of the species Anisakis simplex sensu stricto. Few fish presented with symptoms of red vent syndrome during this study and it was not possible to demonstrate a significant difference between Anisakis numbers in those fish and apparently healthy fish. It was observed that salmon may contain large numbers of worms concentrated around the anus without visible signs of red vent syndrome.
