A study of scrapie affected goat herds
Project Code: M03065
02/08/2011
Goats were considered infected if one or more of the tissue samples taken at post-mortem gave positive results for disease specific prion protein (prPd).
Most scrapie infected goats with PrPd in the brain had very little of it, and only nine cases were considered suitable for phenotype characterization. One of these showed an anomalous reactivity to PrPd antibodies, and was therefore reported to the Strain Typing Expert Group. Although this goat does not fulfil the criteria for BSE, further investigations are underway to characterize this discordant case.
Several clinical suspects, goats with inconclusive signs or with signs of other conditions, and normal goats were monitored before they were culled. Videographic material is now available for teaching purposes.
