This is the fourth report in a series which describes a proficiency testing scheme run onm behalf of the Food Standards Agency for the measurement of radionuclides in foods. This report discusses the results obtained by the UK radioanalytical laboratories on the measurement of total tritium, in the form of tritiated thymidine, in powdered fish and milk.
The length of time taken to prepare the samplesand the instability of tritiated thymidine resulted in intercomparison materials that did not reach the standard of homogeneity achieved in previous exercises. Despite the materials being less than ideal, the Agency agreed to the samples being sent to participating laboratories. The results showed that, allowing for the limitations of the exercise material, most of the participants performed satisfactorily.
