This [project has shown that a combined in vivo/in vitro approach to modelling the sensitization and elicitation phases of allergy in the BN rat/RBL cell system is capable of identifying major and minor food allergens and of identifying important cross-reactivities using a functional assay. Future development of these types of assays would be particularly helpful in the allergenic potential of novel or genetically-modified foods, both in terms of their potential to sensitize de novo and in terms of their potential to cross-react with other allergens.
