Prevalence of CNS embolism and the determination of its potential for visceral dissemination at stunning and slaughter in cattle
Project Code: M03013
01/06/2011
Captive bolt stunning of sheep has been demonstrated to cause entry of brain tissue fragments into the circulation in up to a fifth of animals stunned by this method. Furthermore, in at least half of these animals fragments of brain tissue or brain proteins may be detectable in aortic circulation within a minute of stunning. The results of these experiments indicate that contamination of the ovine carcasss with either brain tissue fragments or brain tissue proteins is probable in a significant proportion of carcasses.
