Review of the potential for waste solvents, from current or historic disposal sites, to enter the food chain
Project Code: C05026
27/06/2004
Contamination of land or groundwater can result from the historical disposal of chlorinated solvents in unlined landfill sites or evaporation lagoons, or from accidental spills. Consequently, crops and livestock raised close to such sites can be exposed to these contaminants. This issue was addressed by reviewing the scientific literature concerning the potential for short chain chlorinated alphatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated benzines to accumulate in the terrestrial foodchain.
