The overall aim opf this project was to identify the most appropriate method to estimate non-milk extrinsic sugar (NMES) content in foods. The specific objectives were:
1. To carry out a literature review to identify the different methods of sugar estimation that have been described or applied to nutritional analyses in the past.
2. To aply the different methods of fNMES estimation to the foods in the 5th edition of McCance and Widdowson’s ’The Composition of Foods’ (M & W) and to identify any significant differences between methods for the NMES content of different groups of foods (e.g. desserts, confectionery).
3. To apply the three methods of NMES estimation to existing dietary data on school children aged 11 to 12 years (high caries risk group). To identify the impact that between-method variation in NMES values for a food/food group has, on estimation of NMES intake and diietary survey outcome.
4. Report and determination of results: To make recommendation for the most appropriate method for estimation of NMES content of foods and diets.
