A Survey of the Dioxin and PCB content of Animal Feed
Project Code: F01008
Central Science Laboratory
Fernandes, A ; Rose, M; White, S
Based on an agreed sampling plan constructed to reflect the animal feed types specified in EU Commission document SANCO/4545/01 – rev.3 and geographical distribution, 158 animal feed samples collected from all four UK regions during October 2003 to February 2004 were analysed for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The concentrations of individual congeners that have been assigned a WHO-TEF value are reported for each sample. Additional PCB congeners (totalling 40) that include the ICES 7 compounds are also reported.
The reporting limits quoted for dioxins, non-ortho-PCBs and ortho-PCB congeners are consistent or better than the requirements for WHO-TEQ measurement given in EU Commission Directive 2002/70/EC. In practical terms upper bound WHO-TEQs were typically as low as 0.03 ng/kg whole for PCDD/Fs, 0.002 ng/kg whole for non-ortho-PCBs and 0.02 ng/kg whole for the ortho-PCBs.
Measurement uncertainty estimates calculated as per the Eurachem guide have been reported for all the individual PCDD/PCDF and PCB congeners. Measurement uncertainty from this data has been extrapolated to the total dioxin and PCB WHO-TEQ values (upper and lower bound) for individual samples and these are also included.
Results presented in this report, including ΣPCDD/F WHO-TEQ, Σnon-ortho-PCB WHO-TEQ, Σortho-PCB WHO-TEQ and total ΣWHO-TEQ values are expressed on a whole weight basis, for comparability with EU directive requirements.
