Transmissibility of scrapie to pigs by oral exposure to brain homogenate
Project Code: M03005

Meat and bone meal (MBM), containing both bovine and ovine derived protein has been used as a component of pig rations for many years, usually at higher inclusion rates than in ruminant rations. It must therefore be assumed, consequent on the epidemiological observations for the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) epidemic, that pigs have been exposed to both BSE and scrapie.
It has been established that pigs are susceptible to subacute spongiform encephalopathies (SE), specifically BSE, by injection of brain homogenate
