The IID study (1993-1996) generated an archive of frozen faecal samples from both cases of IID and matched controls. Since the study new techniques, such as PCR have been developed which allow more sensitive detections of microorganisms than the traditional techniques originally used. These projects aimed to investigate the stability of nucleic acids in the archived faecal specimens and reduce the diagnostic gap from the IID study by applying new techniques. It was anticipated that this would provide further insight into the aetiology of IID in England and Wales.
