Background: Enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC) are a sub-category of E. coli that has only been recognised as a cause of diarrhoea relatively recently. The Intestinal Infectious Disease Study (IID) identified EAEC as an important cause of diarrhoea in the UK. Hospital laboratories rarely test for EAEC because there are no simple and accurate diagnostic tests available. The main objective of this study was to try and develop a simple and accurate diagnostic test for EAEC.
