An evidence review of public Attitudes to emerging food technologies
Project Code: X03002
Food Standards Agency
During the last decade there has been intermittent but often intensive attention on new food technologies, particularly on GM food. Other developments have also had a bearing on public opinion in this area, whether or not they were explicitly linked to food at the time. The birth in 1997 of the first animal cloned from an adult somatic cell for example1 attracted high levels of media attention - as did its early death - and this has undoubtedly had a lasting effect on public
opinion of cloning.
Given the Food Standard Agency (FSA)’s focus on protecting consumer interests in relation to food, public opinion towards new food technologies is something it clearly needs to consider. In order to do this however, it needs to be kept abreast of available evidence on this subject.
