A Survey of Anisakid Nematodes in Scottish Farmed Salmon (extension)
Project Code: S14008ext
19/07/2010
University of Stirling
Wootten, R ; Yoon, G; Bron, J
Background
The original S14008 study looked at the prevalence of anisakid worms in monkfish, cod, mackerel and herring. To complement this main study, a short project was undertaken to examine the prevalence of Anisakids in salmon farmed in Scotland due to the economic importance of this species. Earlier studies had suggested that farmed Atlantic salmon are not exposed to anisakid worms due to the fact that they are fed pelleted diets. This study aimed to provide an up to date picture on the possibility of Scottish farmed salmon being infected with these parasites.
