The PRISM Foodchain Modelling Software: Model Structures for PRISM 2.0

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) requires a modelling capability for the transport of contaminants in terrestrial foodchains in order to be able to assess potential impacts on food quality of routine or accidental releases to the atmosphere.
The PRISM software uses a ‘wrapped’ version of foodchain models implemented in the AMBER compartmental modelling software with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) and direct access to a database of parameter values to produce an integrated package capable of undertaking probabilistic assessments.
The Soil/Plant model in version 1.3 of PRISM is taken from the SPADE (FSA’s current foodchain modelling software). PRISM 1.3 includes a new animal model but is restricted to consideration of a selected number of radioactive contaminants.
The animal model has now been extended to include a number of additional radionuclides, semi-metals and heavy metals. In addition, model structures have been defined for a new Soil/Plant model to replace that used in PRISM 1.3. The present report provides the specification for PRISM model structures for the new Soil/Plant model and for the extended Animal model, including contaminants not incorporated in PRISM 1.3. The specification gives details of the AMBER model compartments and the parameterisation of contaminant transfers between compartments.
The new Soil/Plant model requires input from a hydrological calculations to define water flow rates and compartmental saturations. Some initial ideas on how these calculations could be undertaken are given in an Appendix to this document. However, alternative formulations could be used and the approach could be updated in the light of future research and development activities.
PRISM 2.0 is due to be delivered to FSA in November 2004. An interim version 1.4 will be produced for use at a Workshop to be held in June 2004. The additional contaminants for the Animal model will be implemented in PRISM 1.4. The new Soil/Plant model will be implemented in PRISM 2.0.
